PfCO Registration and the Law

PfCO stands for Permission for Commercial Operation, it is a certificate of competency issued by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) who look after the skies in and around the UK.

In the UK it is a legal requirement that a drone operator has to hold a PfCO in order to work and charge for operating a drone (UAS). If a person or company doesn't have a certificate and are using a drone for commercial advantage now or in the future they are flying illegally and should be reported to your local Police. They will be flying without authorisation, may not have the correct safety training and certainly wont be flying with insurance.

Likewise, anyone without a PfCO flying a drone with a camera equipped in a built up area needs to be 150 meters away from people, vehicles and structures. With a PfCO this is usually reduced to 50 meters. If anyone is found to be in breech of this then please report to you local police.

More information on this can be found on the CAAs website.
